Workers yesterday found a rocket leaking sarin nerve agent vapor at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported (see GSN, Oct. 28).
The sarin was contained inside sealed tubing used to hold the rockets, and none of the material escaped into the atmosphere of the weapons storage structure, said Blue Grass Chemical Activity spokesman Richard Sloan. He added that between two and five leaks are typically discovered each year.
Meanwhile, depot personnel on Wednesday began disposal of 157 gallons of sarin stored in bulk containers (see GSN, Nov. 11; Ashlee Clark, Lexington Herald-Leader, Nov. 14).
